ChuSchool Terms of Service
Version: v1.3
Last updated: 2026-11-06 · Effective date: 2026-11-07
This English text is the governing version (section 14).
1. Who we are and what these terms cover
ChuSchool (chuschool.com) is a Chinese-character learning service for children, operated by Clavis Sinica Limited, 17a Richard Avenue, Half Moon Bay, Bucklands Beach 2014, Auckland, New Zealand, NZBN 9429047957282 ("we", "us"). These terms govern your use of the website and services ("the Service"). By creating an account you agree to them.
2. Who may use the Service
- Accounts are for parents and guardians aged 18 or over. By signing up you confirm you are one.
- Children use the Service through your account, under your supervision. Children do not create accounts.
- You are responsible for activity on your account and for keeping your password secret. Tell us promptly at privacy@chuschool.com if you suspect unauthorised use.
3. Your account
Give accurate information and keep your email address current. Do not share your account with people outside your household. Please do not enter a child's real name in a nickname.
4. Buying textbook PDFs
4.1 What we sell. We sell the PDF editions of our textbooks. Two books (01a and 01b) are free; the other twelve are sold one book at a time. Each purchase includes both paper sizes, A4 and US Letter. Only a parent or guardian with an account can buy.
4.2 Price and payment. Each book costs US$19.99 (including applicable taxes); the actual amount is the one shown on the checkout page. Payment is processed by Stripe: you enter your card details on Stripe's page, and they never reach us.
4.3 Delivery. After payment, you download the book from My textbooks when you are signed in. Each download link works once and for 10 minutes; you can make a new one at any time. Each account can download up to 20 files a day. If we revise a book you bought, you can download the new version from the same page at no cost.
4.4 Your licence. What you may do with a PDF is set out in section 6.
4.5 Refunds. See our Refund Policy. Nothing in these terms or in the Refund Policy affects your statutory rights.
4.6 Disputed payments. If a payment is disputed with your bank, downloads of the book concerned are paused until the dispute is resolved.
4.7 If you delete your account, you can no longer download the books you bought. Please download and keep your copies before deleting.
4.8 Language. The checkout text and the order confirmation email are provided in Chinese and English. If your interface language is Bahasa Melayu or Arabic, they are shown in English.
4A. Membership (subscription)
4A.1 What membership gives you. Members can pick any character in Character of the day and learn as many characters as they like, plus any member features we add later. Everything that is free stays free, including one character a day in Character of the day. Textbook PDFs are not included; they are sold separately (section 4).
4A.2 Price. Membership is paid monthly or yearly, in US dollars, including applicable taxes; the actual amount is the one shown on the checkout page. There are four price bands by country or region, based on the World Bank income groups shown on our pricing page. The band is set by your billing country at checkout; if it differs from the country you chose, we may contact you to adjust. Payment is processed by Stripe; your card details never reach us.
4A.3 Automatic renewal. Your membership renews automatically at the end of each period, and the price of the next period is charged to your card, until you cancel. If we change the price, we will email you at least 30 days before the new price applies to your renewal, so you can cancel first. For yearly memberships we will email you a reminder before each renewal.
4A.4 Cancelling. You can cancel at any time in Manage membership on your account page, or by writing to support@chuschool.com. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep membership until the end of the period you have paid for. We do not give refunds for the unused part of a period, except as set out in the Refund Policy or required by law.
4A.5 Refunds. You can ask for a full refund within 14 days of your first payment (see section 9 of the Refund Policy). Nothing here affects your statutory rights.
4A.6 Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, Stripe tries again over the following days and your membership stays active for up to 3 days after the period ends. If payment still fails, the membership ends; you can join again at any time.
4A.7 Deleting your account. Please cancel your membership before deleting your account; we cannot delete an account while its membership is still set to renew.
4A.8 Language. The checkout text and the membership confirmation email are provided in Chinese, English, Bahasa Melayu and Arabic.
5. Acceptable use
Do not: misuse or attempt to disrupt the Service; access it by automated means such as scraping or bots; try to access other people's accounts or our systems; copy or redistribute our content, including our images, fonts, character data and question banks; or use the Service for any unlawful purpose.
6. Our content and your licence
6.1 We and our licensors own the content in the Service. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the website for your household's non-commercial learning. Some materials include third-party components used under their own licences, for example fonts under open licences and word data derived from CC-CEDICT (CC BY-SA 4.0). See our credits page for attributions.
6.2 Textbook PDFs. When you buy a textbook PDF, or download a free one, you receive a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use it for yourself and your household, and to print it for that purpose. You may not resell, transfer, share, publicly post or upload it, or adapt it for redistribution. Each paid PDF carries your order number in the footer to identify your licensed copy; please do not remove it.
6.3 Schools. Use of any of our textbook PDFs (including the free ones) by teachers and students of the same school for teaching needs a separate whole-school licence; please contact support@chuschool.com to agree the scope.
6.4 Breach. If you resell, share, publicly post or upload a textbook PDF, remove the order number, or use the Service in breach of section 5, we may suspend downloads of the books concerned and ask you to delete the copies. We will tell you why by email. Otherwise your licence to a PDF you have bought does not end, and nothing in this section limits your rights under consumer law.
The spoken audio in our courses is synthetic speech generated in advance with Microsoft Azure AI Speech from our course text. It is not a recording of a human teacher. Only course text is sent to generate it; no personal information is involved.
7. Learning estimates, not exam results
The Service is a learning tool. Progress indicators, levels, and any "readiness" or similar estimates are learning estimates only. They are not exam results, predictions of exam results, or certification, and are not affiliated with or endorsed by any examination body.
Ask Korii. “Ask Korii” answers questions about learning Chinese characters. Answers are generated automatically by AI (Anthropic's Claude) and may be wrong; they do not replace a teacher. Questions unrelated to learning characters receive a fixed reply. A parent must give separate consent for each child; it is off by default. Each child can ask up to 20 questions a day. Please do not enter personal information such as names, addresses, phone numbers or schools. Ask Korii is currently a free trial and may sometimes be unavailable; if we later charge for it, we will tell you by email first.
Completion certificates and badges issued by the Service (for example after 100, 200 or 365 learning days) only record that a child has completed part of our course. They are not an official qualification, an exam result, or proof of proficiency in Chinese, and are not endorsed by any examination body. Certificates are generated on your own device; we do not store a certificate or the name printed on it.
8. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy and Children's Privacy Notice explain how we handle personal information. You can withdraw consent or delete your child's profile or your account at any time.
9. Availability and changes
We work to keep the Service available but do not promise it will always be uninterrupted or error-free. We may improve, change or discontinue features. If we discontinue the whole Service, we will give reasonable notice and let you export your data.
10. Suspension and termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end an account that breaches these terms or puts the Service or others at risk, and will explain why unless the law prevents it. For textbook PDFs, see section 6.4.
11. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we do not give warranties other than those that cannot be excluded, including that learning outcomes will be achieved. Nothing here limits any rights you have under consumer law that cannot be excluded.
12. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you actually paid for the relevant products in the 12 months before the claim; consumer rights that the law does not allow to be excluded are not affected. Nothing limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death, personal injury or fraud.
13. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand. Disputes go first to us at hello@chuschool.com to try to resolve them in good faith. Subject to any mandatory rights you have where you live, the courts of New Zealand have [non-exclusive] jurisdiction.
14. Languages
We provide these terms in several languages for convenience. If there is any conflict or difference in meaning, the English version prevails.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We will email parents before material changes take effect. If you do not agree, you can delete your account. Continued use after the effective date means you accept the updated terms. Changes affecting children's information are covered in the Privacy Policy and may need new consent.
